Publication Account (1983)
The Tolbooth, more conrnonly known as the 'old jail', stood in the Sandknowe. It was described as ugly in the extreme, of two storeys in height and served as tolbooth, prison and court house combined (Brown, 1947, 109). The court until the nineteenth century was presided over by the town's sole municipal officer, the baron bailie.
