Archaeology Notes

NS76NW 66.05 7299 6557.

This small basin on the SW side of the canal, just E of several small branches of the Caledonian Railway serving the Summerlee Iron Works, is clearly visible on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Lanarkshire 1864, sheet vii) and on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Lanarkshire 1899, sheet viiSE).

In the North Lanarkshire Archives, Cumbernauld (Drumpellier Estate Papers, U1 11/92, 2 January 1834) is a plan showing a piece of ground said to have been offered by Mr. McBrayne to the canal for a quay at this location and likely to have been built by the basin.

Information from RCAHMS (MD) 10 January 2002.
