The HERCULES: OSCAR: ST. ANDREW: MIDDLETON: and LATONA, bound to Greenland, sailed from Aberdeen 1st instant, but a gale coming on to the east, the former was driven on shore at the back of the North Pier: and the OSCAR was totally lost on the rocks between the Girdle [Girdle Ness] and Shirtness. Forty-eight people drowned. The three others with much difficulty got back.

The location assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary. This vessel may have stranded within or near Greyhope Bay, presumably while she was attemting to enter Aberdeen harbour.
Aberdeen Harbour (NJ90NE 7.00) is centred at NJ 95 05. The present entrance may be considered to lie at NJ c. 963 060, but this location reflects development towards the East through the construction of successive piers and breakwaters.
Girdle Ness (Girdleness) Lighthouse (NJ90NE 8.00) is at NJ 97159 05348. Short or Shirtness is not noted as such on the 1999 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map.
