Archaeology Notes

NJ90NE 8087 c. 961 057

N57 8 W2 4

NLO: Aberdeen [name: NJ 95 05].

Possibly on map sheet NJ90NW.

Location formerly entered as NJ c. 96 05 [N57 8 W2 4].

7 December 1861, EAGLE, 16 yrs old, brig, 128 tons, 6 crew, carrying coals, stranded, total loss, 2 lives lost, wind NE10, Aberdeen harbour.

Source: PP Abstracts Returns of Wrecks and Casualties on Coasts of the UK 1861 (1862 [3028] LIV.845).

Aberdeen, 7th Dec. [recd., 7th, per E.T. at 11.56]. It blew a South Easterly gale all last night. The EAGLE (schr.), of this port, from Newcastle, was driven ashore on the N side of the harbour, and is a complete wreck: 2 men drowned.

Source: Additional Intelligence, LL, No. 14,875, London, Saturday, December 7 1861.

NMRS, MS/829/68 (no. 2142).

(Classified as wooden brig, with cargo of coal: date of loss cited as 7 December 1861). Eagle: [this vessel] stranded at the entrance to Aberdeen harbour. Capt. Mathieson.

Registration: Aberdeen. Built 1845. 128grt. Length: 25m. Beam: 7m.

(Location of loss cited as N57 8.50 W2 4.00).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The location assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary, being derived from that ('at the entrance to Aberdeen harbour') cited by Whittaker. This remains unverified, but is accepted.

Aberdeen Harbour (NJ90NE 7.00) is centred at NJ 95 05, and extends onto map sheet NJ90NW. The present entrance extends from NJ c. 959 056 to NJ 964 059, but this location reflects development towards the East through the construction of successive piers and breakwaters.

The remains of the vessel were presumably removed without delay from this constrained location.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 23 January 2002.
