Archaeology Notes

NJ90NE 8130 c. 961 057

N57 8.5 W2 4

NLO: Aberdeen [name: NJ 95 05].

Location formerly entered as NJ c. 96 05 [N57 8 W2 4].

(Classified as steel steam trawler, in ballast: registration cited as A 486, and date of loss as 9 February 1904). Campania: [this vessel] stranded [on the] North Pier [at] Aberdeen [Harbour] and then foundered in the [harbour] entrance.

Registration: Aberdeen. Built 1900. 149grt. Length: 32m. Beam: 6m.

(Location of loss cited as N57 8.50 W2 4.00).

I G Whittaker 1998.

(Location entered as NJ c. 961 057 [N57 8.5 W2 4]). The location assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary. Aberdeen Harbour (NJ90NE 7.00) is centred at NJ 95 05. The North Pier (NJ90NE 7.02) extends from NJ 9590 0570 to NJ 9639 0609.

The present entrance may be considered to lie at NJ c. 961 057, but this location reflects development towards the East through the construction of successive piers and breakwaters.

The remains of this vessel were presumably removed without delay from this constrained location.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 28 June 2007.
