Archaeology Notes

NJ90NE 8139 c. 961 057

N57 8.5 W2 4

NLO: Aberdeen [name: NJ 95 05].

Location formerly entered as NJ c. 96 05 [N57 8 W2 4].

(Location of loss cited as 'Aberdeen, Harbour entrance, S side of the channel').

R Larn and B larn 1998.

(Classified as wooden steam paddle tug, in ballast: date of loss cited as 6 February 1912). Fairweather: [this vessel] stranded at the South side of the channel, Aberdeen [harbour entrance].

Registration: Aberdeen. Built 1871. 87grt. Length: 27m. Beam: 5m.

(Location of loss cited as N57 8.50 W2 3.00).

I G Whittaker 1998.

(Location entered as NJ c. 961 057 [N57 8.5 W2 4]). The location assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary. Aberdeen Harbour (NJ90NE 7.00) is centred at NJ 95 05. The present entrance may be considered to lie at NJ c. 963 060, but this location reflects development towards the East through the construction of successive piers and breakwaters.

The remains of the vessel were presumably removed without delay from this constrained location.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 4 February 2002.
