Archaeology Notes

NJ90SW 200 9296 0349

Nothing is visible of an ice-house and what were probably two rows of cottages, which stood on the SE bank of the River Dee at the E end of the Bridge of Dee (NJ90SW 3). As depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire, 1869, sheet lxxxvi), one of the rows stood on the W side of a garden immediately S of the bridge, while the other stood on the N side of a garden a little further to the S. An unroofed building, situated adjacent to the S end of another garden, lay immediately W of the northern row. At the end of the 19th century the layout of the cottages was little changed, but the unroofed building is shown roofed on the 2nd edition of the map and annotated ice-house (1904, sheet lxxxvi.NE).
