NK02NE 8016 c. 054 299

N57 21.6 W1 54.6

NLO: Slains Castle [name: NK 053 300]

Peterhead [name: NK 135 465].

Location formerly entered as NK c. 05 29 [N57 21 W1 55].

Possibly on map sheets or NK03SE.

(Classified as Steel, Steam Trawler: registration number cited as A 376, and date of loss as 6 December 1915). Philorth: this vessel stranded at Clochtow, near the Old Castle of Slains. On Riddle Skerries. Capt. Swanson.

Registration: Aberdeen. Built 1892. 139grt.

(Location of loss cited as N57 22.0 W1 54.0).

I G whitaker 1998.

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative; that of the Riddle Skerries cannot be established from the available map evidence. The name presumably applies to some or all of the numerous offshore skerries around the prominent but unnamed headland upon which stand Old Slains Castle (NK03SE 2) and Slains Castle (NK13NW 1), at NK 0532 3000 and NK1015 3610 respectively.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 11 October 2005.
