Archaeology Notes

NJ96SW 13 c. 927 613.

(NJ 927 613) Short cists have been found at Blackhills during sand and gravel digging, one, about 1900, yielding a Cb type beaker (NMAS Acc. No.EQ 48). In July 1905 another cist was found and properly excavated. It contained a food vessel, having similarities with the above beaker, and a flexed male skeleton probably covered by an ox-hide. The food vessel is in the Aberdeen University Museum.

(PSAS 40 310-11 erroneously relates the 1905 discovery to Blackhills, Fyvie parish - NJ 77 37)

J G Callander 1909; M E C Mitchell 1934; Proc Aberdeen Univ Anatomical Soc 1906.

No further information was found regarding the findspot. Numerous sand and gravel quarries exist in the area, some of which are still used.

The food vessel and skeleton are still in the Marischal Museum, Aberdeen.

Visited by OS (NKB) 8 March 1967.
