NLO: Nairn [name: NH 885 567].

Possibly on map sheet NH95NW.

Lossiemouth, 21st Dec. The AEOLUS, Shaw, from Memel to Leith, with seed, went ashore near Nairn this morning: ship and cargo likely to be a total loss.

Source: LL, No. 15,819, London, Thursday, December 22 1864.

Nairn, 3rd Jan. The greater part of the cargo has been saved from the AEOLUS, Shaw, from Memel to Leith, which went ashore near this place 21st Dec., but the vessel filled before the whole could be taken out.

Source: LL, No. 15,831, London, Thursday, January 5 1865.

NMRS, MS/829/72 (no. 10765).

(Classified as schooner, with cargo of seed: date of loss cited as 2 December 1864). Aeolus: this vessel was wrecked near Nairn. Capt. Shaw.

(Location of loss cited as N57 36.0 W3 50.0).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. The term 'Nairn beach' probably indicates the extensive area of sand dunes to the E of the mouth of the River Nairn. Whittaker appears not to accept this location.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 19 February 2002.
