Hopkirk in 'Account of the Forth and Clyde Navigation' (1816) states that the Woodend Loch covers 56 acres, 1 rood and contains 1,142 lockfulls of water.

The canal was drawing water from this loch by the end of the eighteenth century.

This loch is clearly marked on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Lanarkshire 1864, sheet vii), on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Lanarkshire 1899, sheet viiNE), on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1982) and on the OS Basic Scale raster map (ND).
