Archaeology Notes

NJ90SE 8008 c. 971 042

N57 7.7 W2 2.9

NLO: Greg Ness [name: NJ 971 042]

Aberdeen [name: NJ 95 05]

Cromarty Firth [name centred NH 69 67]

Nigg Bay [name centred NJ 968 046].

(Location of loss cited as 'Cromarty Firth, Nigg Bay, Greg Ness').

R Larn and B Larn 1998.

(Classified as steel steam trawler: registration cited as A 604 and date of loss as 6 June 1927). Ben Torc: [this vessel] stranded at Gregness [Greg Ness], 0.5 mile S of Aberdeen.

Registration: Aberdeen. Built 1913. 199grt. Length: 35m. Beam: 7m.

(Location of loss cited as N57 7.75 W2 2.75).

I G Whittaker 1998.

(Location entered as NJ c. 971 042 [N57 7.7 W2 2.9]). The location, map sheet and quasi-administrative area assigned to this record are essentilly tentative. Greg Ness cannot be identified within Nigg Bay or the Cromarty Firth, and the location of this stranding within this area by Larn and Larn appears highly improbable. It should also be listed within section DB (rather than DC) of their work.

Whittaker locates the wreck on Greg Ness near Aberdeen, and this appears more probable, being consistent with both the type of vessel and her port of registration.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 22 February 2002.
