Buchanan Street Station Tunnel, completed 1849 for the Caledonian Rly, although originally planned for the Glasgow, Garnkirk and Coatbridge Rly. A double-track tunnel on a 1-in-79 gradient with a circular ventilation shaft about half way. The southern [SW] end has a spectacular facade; the northern [NE] end is plainer.

Just outside the south [SW] end, in the retaining wall, can be seen a relieving arch over the Queen St Station [approach] tunnel (NS56NE 1866.02). The Buchanan Street tunnel has been disused since 1967 and the track has been lifted.

J R Hume 1974.
