Main Street
Variously Church Street or High Street, linking tolbooth, ancient market place and kirk. Decayed in the 18th century, mostly rebuilt in the 19th with sturdy artisan dwellings through shale-oil money. A confident curved ashlar corner into the street, its neighbour is a substantial late 18th-century three-bay villa with a moulded doorway. Next door, a former pend has been filled in to form a gracious curved window. 1890 tenements, what any self-respecting industrial community thought it ought to build, surge up incongruously. Further south, there are whitewashed cottages, harled houses and some elegant ashlar houses on the west side with octagonal chimney pots and graceful doorways flanked with Doric columns. No 71,1894, a confident reworking of an older building, has an ashlar façade and pantiled roof, a fine window with hood-mould at ground floor, swaggering first-floor gabled window with pediment and datestone and, above all, art glass in the square fanlight.
