Archaeology Notes

HP50SE 100 57151 03651.

A stonewalled, roofless farmhouse of at least two phases of construction, and a formal steading with at least four buildings one of which is partially roofed, have been recorded on oblique aerial photographs (RCAHMSAP 2003). The buildings are depicted as roofed on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Orkney & Shetland (Shetland) 1881, sheet viii) and as roofless on the current edition of the OS 1:10,000 map (1973). There are the remains of a walled garden to the SE of the farmhouse.

Information from RCAHMS (MMB) 24 August 2004.

This site was visited as part of the RCAHMS Scottish Farm Buildings Survey. The farmstead is noted as the remains of a two storey house. The ruined steading which comprises several outbuildings, includes a barn, a byre, 3 loose boxes, a horse engine plus a but & ben shepherd's house. The buildings were derelict on the date of visit.

Activities

Field Visit (January 1970 - December 1991)

A survey of deserted settlements in Unst by June Owers. The survey includes photographs, sketches and historical information.

Standing Building Recording (26 March 2007 - 27 March 2007)

HP 5711 0364 Historic building recording was undertaken from 26–7 March 2007 at Lund House on the Shetland island of Unst. The principal aim of the work was to inform any further research or recording and to record the building prior to further collapse or down taking. The project included metric and photographic survey of the building, a written description and associated desk-based research.

Lund House, a fairly typical Shetland Haa House, was probably built in the early or mid 18th century and was later raised and extended in 2 phases, of c1800 and c1900. The likely builder was Andrew Scott of Voesgarth/Greenwall or possibly John Ross, descended from the Ross’s of Little Tarrel, near Portmahomack in Ross-shire. The surrounding steading, more typical of the local vernacular, and walled garden may also

date from the 18th century.

Archive to be deposited with RCAHMS. Report to be deposited with Shetland SMR and RCAHMS.

Funder: The National Trust for Scotland.

OASIS ID: headland1-32976

Field Visit (11 December 2009 - 11 December 2009)

Uyeasound Primary School visited the abandonded farmstead to take a GPS plot and photographs to show the location and current condition of the croft recorded previously by June Owers.

Srp Note (28 September 2011)

Lund is located at 41m OD facing NW on flat pasture land. Due to the dangerous state of the building, the walls were greatly reduced to c 1m height in 2009. The porch remains standing and the positions of the windows are still visible within the surviving wall.

A plan of Lund was sketched by June Owers in her survey of abandoned settlements on Unst (1976, 1980).

Lund was visited by the Uyeasound Primary School on 11/12/2009 as part of their SRP project to update the record of abandoned croft house buildings drawn and photographed by June Owers during the 1970s and 1980s.
