Accessing Scotland's Past Project

The single-storeyed cottage at No 22 The Green dates from the late eighteenth century, and forms part of a group of houses that together make Swinton a rare surviving example of an early planned village in Scotland.

The cottage has a slated roof and brick chimney-stacks. The windows and door surrounds consist of large blocks of dressed stone, providing a contrast with the surrounding wall, which is harled.

To the rear of the cottage is a 'but-and-ben' structure. This is of particular interest, as it retains some of its original eighteenth-century features, including a cobbled floor, and several fireplaces.
