Archaeological Notes

NS33NW 8014 c. 30 38
N55 36 W4 42

NLO: Irvine [name: NS 325 395]
Irvine Bay [name: NS 295 378].

Location formerly entered as NS c. 303 381 [N55 36.4 W4 41.7].

(Classified as sloop: no cargo specified, but date of loss cited as January 1829). Inverary [Inveraray] Castle: this vessel was lost off Irvine Bar.
Registration: Glasgow. Built 1818. 32 tons burthern. Length: 11m. Beam: 5m.
(Location of loss cited as N55 36.33 W4 42.00).
I G Whittaker 1998.

The location assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary. Irvine Bar is not noted on the 1998 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map, but the River Garnock enters Irvine Bay at NS 303 380 and the bar may be envisaged as a Southeastwards extension of Ardeer Spit. The extensive area of vIrvine Harbour (NS33NW 40.00) is centred at NS 30668 38222.
It remains uncertain whether this vessel stranded or foundered: the former appears the more probable cause of loss.
Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 15 November 2005.
