Ayr, 29th Nov. 'The morning the wind came round to N.W. and blew with increased violence until 3 p.m. The QUEEN ADELAIDE, Davis, from Liverpool to Cardiff, was driven on shore outside the north wall, but expected to be got off. The PANMURE, Howat, from Bay Chaleur, in taking the Bar, struck, lost her steerage, and went on shore round the North Pier, and is in a very dangerous state: crew saved. The KITTY & MOLLY, from Clyde to Port Nessock, in entering the harbor struck the South Pier, went outside the wall, and became a total wreck. The master drowned.'

Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 6904, London, Tuesday December 3 1833.

NMRS, MS/829/71 (no. 6879).

(Classified as sloop, with cargo of grain: date of loss cited as 29 November 1833). Kitty & Molly: this vessel was wrecked in Ayr Bay.

Registration: Stranraer. Built 1803. 30 tons burthern. Length: 13m. Beam: 4m.

(Location of loss cited as N55 27.5 W4 38.0).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The location assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary. Ayr harbour (NS32SW 123.00) is centred at NS 32930 22754.

Ayr Bay is not noted as such on the 1998 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map. UKHO chart no. 2126 (1975, amended 1992) applies the name to the broad embayment between Irvine [name: NS 325 395] and Heads of Ayr [name: NS 284 188], and places the name around N55 29.4 W4 46.5 [NS 247 253].

This vessel evidently stranded.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 7 September 2005.

Note (7 September 2005)

The location assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary. Ayr Bay is not noted as such on the 1998 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map. The name presumably applies to the extensive embayment between Heads of Ayr (NS 28 18) and Troon (NS 31 30). Ayr harbour (NS32SW 123.00) is centred at NS 32930 22754.

This vessel evidently stranded.
