Archaeological Notes

NN90NE 39 9743 0560

An extensive field-system is revealed by vertical aerial photographs (RAF 106G/SCOT UK 120. frame nos 3266 and 3267, 20 June 1946,) on the lower slopes of the southern flank of Cleuch Hill. Most of this area is now occupied by a coniferous plantation, but a pear-shaped field on the NE side of the field-system extends beyond the edge of the wood on the N. To the WSW (at c. NN 9710 0537), the field-system was truncated by the improved ground on the haughland of the River Devon (partly occupied by a water-meadow, NN90NE 21). In places, rig is visible on the photographs, and a short distance to the W of a sheepfold (NN 9755 0545) there are two small patches of what may have been lazy-beds. The sheepfold, which is rectangular on plan and subdivided internally, is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perthshire and Clackmannanshire 1866, sheet cxvii).
A subrectangular building (NN 9736 0560; GDEV98 178) also lies outside the plantation, occupying a platform levelled into the ENE-facing slope above the field-system. The building measures about 9.8m from NNW to SSE by 3.5m over a low stony bank; the front of the platform is 1m in height, and the back scarp has been dug about 0.5m into the slope. What may be an outshot, measuring 2.8m in length and 2.6m in breadth, has been dug into the back of the platform at the NNW end of that side.
