Gailes Camp was in existence by March 1916, occupied by infantry of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. In that month the Army reorganised its officer training and the 9th and 10th Officer Training Battalions were based there. Training lasted for four and a half months and each battalion trained 400 officers (600 after 1917) at a time.
A Gailes Camp hospital is recorded as having been in existence during the First World War.

The remains of a large military camp have been identified from post-war vertical air photographs (V 82/RAF/882, 71-2, flown 30 March 1954). Many rows of hut bases are visible spread over a large area to the S, SE and E of Gailes farmsteading. This camp may be connected with Dundonald camp (NS33SW 35) situated to the S.
