Accessing Scotland's Past Project

Shedden Park Road is a result of the outward growth in Kelso that occurred throughout the later eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, reflecting the desire of the wealthy to escape the crowded town centre. Its buildings are a mixture of terraced two-storeyed houses and larger detached properties. Before Shedden Park was gifted to the burgh, the street was named 'Bullet Loan', possibly named after the French game of 'boules', a version of which was known in Scotland as 'Land Bullet'.

No 17 Shedden Park Road is part of a row of five terraced houses at the Coalmarket end of Shedden Park Road. Each of these mid-nineteenth-century houses stands two storeys high and is built of coursed rubble, with a continuous slated roof running the length of the block. Most of the houses appear to be unaltered, retaining features such as the original style of windows and the low wall enclosing a small front garden.
