Standing Building Recording (2 February 2018)

NT 16336 66466 A historic building survey was undertaken, 2 February 2018, of a gable wall to the rear of the Grey Horse Inn, prior to the wall’s demolition. The gable wall forms part of the SW side of the SE boundary wall to the rear of the inn. It once formed the SE wall of a small outbuilding servicing the pub, and probably dates to at least 1850, when the pub was built. However, it is possible that the wall was part of an earlier building, as buildings existed here in the early 19th century. The wall had one original feature, a small fireplace; a garden feature had been added after the demolition of the building in the late 1980s.

A subsequent watching brief, during groundwork associated with development, found no evidence of a building. Any foundations appear to have been grubbed up, with the ground stripped to bedrock, and then built up again to create a landscaped area.
