A large fort on Bein a'Chaisteal was visible c.1800, but has since been destroyed by landslips.

Near the head of Glen Lyon rises Beinn a'Chaisteal, on a spur of which stood the most westerly of the Glen Lyon forts. (See NN44SE 7 for full description of these forts). It is said to be almost obliterated.

No evidence of a fort in this area was discovered. Local opinion is that the name Beinn a'Chaisteil (at NN 347 363, on OS 6 inch 1900) derives not from the presence of a fort, but from the fact that the natural rock face has a castellated appearance from certain view points.
