Archaeology Notes

HU16SE 11 c. 16 61.

In and since July 1893, probable Bronze Age cinerary urns have been found in a small hillock which was used for turf cutting near the head of Culla Voe. The sites of the urns, which are only a few feet apart, are usually marked by a circular setting of stones placed on edge, about 2' in diameter. Three, at least, of the urns were each covered by a large flat stone. Two are now in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) and one, found in 1930, is in Lerwick Museum. The circles of stones are no longer visible, but they are known to occur also on other parts of the island.

RCAHMS 1946, visited 1930; D G Barron 1895.

No further information.

Visited by OS (RL) 19th June 1968.
