N57 8.6 W2 3.6

NLO: Aberdeen [name: NJ 95 05]

Balnagask [name: NJ 959 046].

Location formerly entered as NJ c. 96 05 [N57 8 W2 4].

8 September 1847. LORD REDHAVEN, Stranded near Aberdeen.

Source: PP Return from Lloyd's books of Collisions, Accidents and Wrecks of Vessels 1847-50 (1851 (688) LII.1).

Aberdeen, 2nd Sept. The LORD REDHAVEN, (sloop), of Portsoy, from Wemyss to this port, is on shore outside the breakwater in a dangerous position; crew saved. [Record received incomplete].

NMRS, MS/829/67 (no. 59).

(No classification or cargo specified: date of loss cited as 6 September 1847). Lord Reidhaven: [this vessel] stranded outside Aberdeen harbour.

Registration: Portsoy.

(Location of loss cited as N57 8.50 W2 4.00).

I G Whittaker 1998.

(Location entered as NJ c. 965 058 [N57 8.6 W2 3.6]). The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. The breakwater that is mentioned in the primary account may be the Old South Breakwater (NJ90NE 7.04), which extends from NJ 9637 0572 to NJ 9637 0581 and was built before 1840. The (present) South Breakwater (NJ90NE 7.05) is situated further East, and postdates the recorded stranding of this vessel.

Aberdeen Harbour (NJ90NE 7.00) is centred at NJ 95 05. The present entrance may be considered to lie at NJ c. 961 057, but this location reflects development towards the East through the construction of successive piers and breakwaters.

The date that is cited by Whittaker is evidently that of the report of the stranding; the earliest date that is cited in the primary account is preferred. It remains unclear when the vessel stranded or whether she was successfully recovered.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 14 July 2003.
