(NN 782 012) A hoard of 180 gold coins, of sovereigns dating from 1327 to 1547, - of Burgundy (1); France (83); England (13) and Scotland (83) - were found, May 1869, during the digging of the foundation of an extension to Dunblane Prison (NN 7820 0128). They were contained in an earthen vessel which is now in Smith Institute, Stirling (A.Q.6).
In 1873 the National Museum Antiquaries of Scotland received all but 30 of the coins which went to the Leighton Library, Dunblane.
G Sim 1871; PSAS 1875 (Donations); Catalogue of Smith Institute, Stirling 1934.
The original coins were sold by the Leighton Library Trustees through Christie's between Feb and May 1959 to an unnamed purchaser. (Information from Mr J W Barty, Trustee Leighton Library, Dunblane). Replicas of the coins are still on display, where the date of their discovery is given as 3rd May 1869. The exact find spot is not known; Dunblane Prison has been demolished.
In the Smith Institute museum, Stirling, is the jug or jar (Accession No. 280), 5 1/2inches high, with loop-side handle, coarsely glazed and restored, which contained the coin hoard. It was found when digging foundations of the Dunblane prison in 1844 (Information from Curator Smith Institute, Stirling).
Despite the discovery date discrepancy, the hoards appear to be the same.
