Archaeology Notes

NN71NE 1 793 175

(Centred NN 793 173) ROMAN STONE (NR) (6 shown).

OS 6" map (1901)

Stone F (as described by the OS 1974), north of the road, is recorded as NN71NE 1.1.

These stones are believed to mark the graves or commemorate the death of Roman soldiers who fell in a battle fought here between the Romans and the Caledonians.

Name Book 1860

Although claimed to be of Roman origin these stones are no different from the majority of standing stones.

'A': A huge pointed mass of conglomerate schist, its apex being 11ft 4ins above ground.

'B': 5ft 1in high with a basal girth of 8ft 10ins. From this stone the others in the group are visible.

'C': Tapers sharply up to a small narrow edge, which is at present 9ft 4ins in vertical height above the ledge surrounding the base. Leans over to the S.

'D': The present vertical height is 8ft 6ins. It differs from the others in standing on a flattish circular cairn or raised platform 15ft in diameter consisting of moderate sized stones. The monolith, which leans towards the N, is set on the southern crest of the cairn. The interior appears to have been partially excavated.

'E': 6ft 9ins high with a basal girth of 16ft 1in. It stands on the W arc of a rudely circular setting of small stones which lie on the flat. Five of these blocks are large enough to be noticeable.

'F': A block of rather rounded whinstone 6ft 4ins high, the base being of an irregular four-sided shape, having a jutting-out ledge on the S. Another stone, lying prostate, has been seen some distance to the E near the unnamed stream flowing past the S stone (E).

F R Coles 1911

These stones are as described by Coles, except that all the stones cannot be seen from 'B' - he probably meant 'C'.

Stone 'D': The small cairn described by Coles is more likely to be a stone clearance heap, it is approximately 11m in diameter and 0.5m high, and apart from the hollow in the centre, is otherwise heather-covered. Stone 'E': Only two of the stones of the 'stone setting' are now readily visible and it is possible that they represent stone clearance.

No trace of the seventh stone mentioned by Coles was found.

Surveyed at 6" scale.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 18 November 1968

'A': NN 7954 1739.

'B': NN 7920 1743.

'C': NN 7910 1714.

'D': NN 7903 1689.

'E': NN 7898 1682.

'F': NN 7922 1787.

These stones are generally as described. Stone 'D' stands on a flattish mound of loose and heather-covered stones. This mound is oval in shape measuring 11m N-S by 9.5m and is larger than other clearance heaps nearby. Its centre is hollow. Although there are no visible kerb stones, the general size and nature of the mound together with the presence of the standing stone suggest it to be a possible cairn.

Surveyed at 1:10000.

Visited by OS (BS) 28 February 1974.

Standing stones scheduled (under three separate orders) as Shillinghill, standing stones (Aodann Mhor) and Craigneich, standing stone.
