NLO: Montrose [name: NO 720 572]

Ferryden [name: NO 718 567]

Scurdie Ness [name: NO 735 567].

Location formerly entered as NO c. 72 56 [N56 42 W2 27].

28 February 1852, NELLY, of Montrose, sloop, 47 ton, 4 men, Alloa to Montrose, coal, wind N force 7 clear, 6 am, tide ? hour of high water, no exams, vessel age 67, value #40, not insured, cargo #30, not insured, place - Montrose. Montrose, 28th Feb. The NELLY, Thom, from the Frith, in beating into the harbour this morning missed stays and drove on the rocks above the lowermost beacon, where she is likely to become a total wreck. [record received incomplete].

NMRS, MS/829/67 (no. 344).

(Classified as sloop with cargo of coal: date of loss cited as 28 February 1852). Nelly: [this vessel] stranded on rocks off Montrose. Capt. Trow. (Not in Montrose loss list).

Registration: Montrose. Built 1785. 47nrt.

(Location of loss cited as N56 41.50 W2 26.00).

I G Whittaker 1998.

(Location re-entered as NO c. 725 568 [N56 42.1 W2 27.0]). The location assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary, being derived from the unverified location of loss ('on rocks off Montrose') that is cited by Whittaker.

Montrose Harbour or the Port of Montrose (NO75NW 44.00) occupies an ill-defined area around NO 7123 5121. It does not have a clearly-defined entrance, but is approached (from the E) between the extensive estuarine sandbanks of the River South Esk, which extend as far E as Scurdie Ness [name: NO 735 567].

The 1999 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map indicates a continuous rocky shore along the S side of the Esk between Ferryden and Scurdie Ness, opposite (to the S of) these sandbanks.

In the absence of any offshore rocks in or near the estuary of the River South Esk, a location of loss may be suggested for this vessel on this rocky shore

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 18 November 2011.
