Archaeology Notes

NF19NW 8001 c. 101 988

N57 48.5 W8 34.1

NLO: St Kilda [name: NF 09 99]

Bagh a' Bhaile or Loch Hiort [name centred NF 101 988].

Possibly on map sheet NF09NE.

Formerly also entered as NF19NW 8009 at cited location NF c. 10 98 [N57 48 W8 34], under name Mary Helen.

13 June 1888. MARY ELLEN. 31 years of Fowey. Wood schooner. 98 ton. 5 crew. Master and owner J. Willcock, Polruan, Cornwall. Liverpool to Iceland. Salt. Wind NW10. St. Kilda Bay, North Atlantic.

Source: PP Abstracts of Shipping Casualties on Coasts, or in Rivers and Harbours of the UK July 1887-88 (1889 [C.5730] LXIX.597).

NMRS, MS/829/68 (no. 1673).

(Classified as wooden schooner, with cargo of salt: date of loss cited as 4 June 1888). Mary Helen: this vessel sank at anchor in [the] Bay of St Kilda. Capt. Willcock.

Registration: Fowey. Built 1857. 98 tons [unspecified].

(Location of loss cited as N57 48.00 W8 32.50).

I G Whittaker 1998.

(Location cited as NF c. 10 98). The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. St Kilda Bay is probably to be equated with Bagh a' Bhaile or Loch Hiort (also known as Village Bay); a location reasonably close inshore may be assumed.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 1 December 2003.

(Location cited as NF c. 101 988). The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. Bay of St Kilda is not noted as such on the 1996 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map, but the name presumably applies to the prominent indentation which is widely known as Village Bay, and also as Bagh a' Bhaile or Loch Hiort. This is set into the SE side of Hirta or Hiort, the main island of the St Kilda group, and has presumably always seen the greatest use of any around the island, being the setting for St Kilda village.

The date of loss cited by Whittaker is accepted.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 7 July 2008.
