Archaeology Notes

HY41SW 16 4489 1090.

(HY 4489 1090) Site of Grammar School (NR)

OS 25" map, Orkney, 1st ed., (1881).

Referred to in the town charter of Kirkwall, in the 15th century, as an existing establishment. A new school-house was erected circa 1820.

New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845.

In 1764 the school buildings erected by Bishop Reid (1541-48) were condemned and two new schools were erected under one roof, on the north side of St Magnus Cathedral (HY41SW 10) close to Broad Street (this is the site shown by the OS).

It was demolished c1820 and there is now no surface indication of its site which is in a graveyard.

The Grammar school prior to 1764 seems to have been in Palace Street and is shown at the west end of this street, at HY 4485, on Hossock's plan. (B H Hossack 1900).

Visited by OS (NKB) 7 April 1964.
