Archaeology Notes

NH98SW 8003 c. 913 844

N57 50.2 W3 49.9

NLO: Portmahomack [name: NH 915 813]

Dornoch Firth [name centred NH 87 89].

Location formerly entered as NH c. 913 844 [N57 50.2 W3 49.9].

Possibly on map sheet NH98NW.

13 August 1885, HANSOM, 16 yrs old, not registered, wooden lugger, 15 tons, 5 crew. Master and Owner W. Thompson, Buckie. Departed Buckie for fishing, in ballast. Wind NNE9, stranded Portmahomack Bay, Co. Ross.

Source: PP Abstracts of Shipping Casualties on Coasts, or in Rivers and Harbours of the UK July 1885-86 (1887 [C.5196] LXXIV.449).

NMRS, MS/829/68 (no. 1873).

(Classified as wooden lugger, in ballast: registration number cited as BF 213 and date of loss as 13 August 1885). Hansom: the vessel stranded in Portmahomack Bay. Capt. Thomson.

Registration: Buckie. Built 1868. 15grt. Length: 10m.

(Location of loss cited as N57 50.25 W3 50.00).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The location assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary. Portmahomack Bay is not noted as such on the 1998 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map, but the name presumably applies to the well-defined indentation in front of Portmahomack village.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 15 December 2003.
