Edinburgh, Newcraighall Road, Niddrie Cottages

Built prior to World War One (probably c.1912), these houses comprise a row of five one-and-a-half-storeyed blocks, four of which are semi-detached cottages. They are built from yellow (fire-clay rich) brick, and associated with the local collieries of the Niddrie and Benhar Coal Company (Niddrie and Newcraighall Pits, the latter operating from 1898 to 1968). The fifth (east-most) block is longer than the others, comprising four dwellings in a small terrace. All the cottages have gabled slate roofs and dormers.

Visited by RCAHMS (MKO) 3 July 1996

Collection item D2349 showing detail of typical slate roof, chimney stack and fireclay cans has been linked to each of the semi detached cottages, 9-16 Niddrie Cottages, although it probably shows 13 or 15 (AC 27 January 2004).
