Archaeological excavations were undertaken in June 1974 on the site of the demolished William Johnston's garage. At least six medieval tenements were discovered during the short archaeological investigation, which concentrated on the frontages of the buildings. Despite the area being badly disturbed by the oil/petrol tanks for the garage, timber houses were discovered, one of which was 'boat shaped'. The timber built houses were dated to c.1300 and the excavation found that they had been replaced by stone house during the late fifteenth century. The stone built house had been altered in c.1600 and was eventually demolished to make way for the garage in c.1930.
Finds included medieval pottery, glass, bone, metalwork, a cannon ball and a fragment of textile which dated to c.1300.
Excavations were directed by Mr N Q Bogdan, Department of Medieval History, University of St Andrews
Sponsored by the Department of the Environment.
