Activities

Field Visit (8 April 1999)

A group of prehistoric structures, which includes fifteen hut-circles, a burnt mound, two cairns and cultivation remains, covering an area roughly 750m from NE to SW by 400m transversely, extends across the lower slopes of Ben Tirran, some 600m SE of Wheen.

The hut-circles are circular, with the exception of four (CLOVA99 474, 491, 495, 466) that are oval, and range in diameter from 8m to 15.5m within stony banks up to 2.7m in thickness. Where visible, the entrances are situated in the southern arc. An exception is the largest hut-circle (CLOVA99 466, NO 36570 70482), which measures 15.5m by 10.2m within a wall reduced to a stony bank 3.1m in thickness and 0.5m in height. It has an entrance in its E side and possibly a second in the W. Two of the hut-circles are ring-ditch houses. One of these (CLOVA99 498, NO 36727 70427) measures 12.3m in diameter over a ditch up to 2.6m in breadth and within an external stony bank; the other (CLOVA99 795, NO 36831 70650) measures 8.2m in diameter over a ditch 3m in breadth and within its external stony bank.

A ring-cairn (CLOVA99 465, NO 36548 70495), which lies immediately NW of the largest hut-circle, measures 10.6m in diameter over a kerb of large boulders; its central court measures 4.3m within a boulder kerb. Another cairn (CLOVA99 28, NO 36726 70851), which lies to the N, measures 8.5m in diameter and is overlain by a small pen. A burnt mound (CLOVA99 29, NO 36768 70838), lying some 30m ESE of this cairn, measures 8.5m from N to S by 7.2m transversely and up to 0.6m in height. It has a hollow in its W side. Over 200 small cairns and short lengths of stony bank are spread across the hillslope. The cairns vary in size and the banks form no coherent pattern and are probably elongated clearance heaps.

To the NNW there are two subrectangular buildings (CLOVA99 435, 437). The former, which has three compartments, measures 12.4m from NW to SE by 2.1m within a wall that has rounded internal corners and an entrance in its SW side. The second building (CLOVA99 437) measures 4.1m from NW to SE by 2m transversely within a wall that also has rounded internal corners and an entrance in SW side. These buildings lie to the NNW of a township (NO37SE 58) that stretches across the centre of the distribution of prehistoric monuments.
