Archaeological Notes
NN82SE 69 8670 2040
Cropmarks on oblique aerial photographs (RCAHMSAP 1982) reveal the ditches of a cursus (EARNAP 145) extending roughly from NNE to SSW across the broad terrace to the S of Crieff. The visible portion of the cursus extends over about 410m, its two ditches converging slightly from about 135m apart on the NNE to 105m on the SSW. On the SSW the ditches disappear at the top of the steep terrace edge forming the N edge of the valley floor on the N side of the River Earn. A large oval hollow, presumably natural, lies between the ditches at the SSW end, and a further ditch runs obliquely between the ditches on a NE to SW axis in the SSW half. The line of the W ditch of the cursus is broken by what may be a pit-defined circle (EARNAP 146, NN 8663 2037), measuring about 12m in diameter and probably composed of elongated pits. The line of two palisade trenches intersect the eastern ditch ( NN82SE 68), and the site of the Stayt of Crieff (NN82SE 14, 'Site of' marked on 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perthshire 1866, sheet xcv)) appears to lie immediately to the E of the westernmost ditch.
