(NN 8765 6538) Site of Cill Aindreas (NR)
OS 6" map, Perthshire, 1st ed., (1861)
Clagh-ghil-Aindreas, or the cemetery of Andrew's disciple, is on the E bank of the Tilt: it is circular, partly eroded by the river: the bones are contained in coffins of five flags each.
To the south stood Andersmass market, the cross being a large white stone standing on a raised circle of earth, till Duke James's time. (?James, Duke of Atholl - c.1750).
Statistical Account (OSA) 1792.
Cille Aindreas, St. Andrews, lies immediately south of the inn (at Bridge of Tilt on the Inverness road) (area NN 876 653).
New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845.
The burial ground, at the back of the Tilt Hotel is called the Blackwood. About 1840 stone coffins consisting of 6 loose slabs were found. In one was a skeleton still possessing teeth and long hair. The coffins were not disturbed. The bodies had been doubled up in the coffins.
C I K Bowstead 1915.
No local knowledge of the burial ground, burials or market exists. The site shown on the OS 25" map is now occupied by a disused stackyard and no trace of any burials could be found. The 'Blackwood' referred to a black pine wood which stood behind the hotel.
Neither of the names applied to the site could be confirmed.
