Ayr, 3d April. 'About sixty sail of vessels left Lamlash yesterday afternoon for ports in Ireland and St. George's Channel, but the wind having soon changed to WNW blowing a gale, they could neither get to the southward or reach Lamlash, and in the course of last night and this morning most of them go to Troon harbour with loss of sails, &c. During the gale the KINLOCH, Fotherington, from Glasgow to Waterford, was run foul of between Lamlash and Ailsa by a brig, name unknown, when the former became water-logged, and the crew were taken off the wreck when in an sinking state, by the VINE, Hunter, of Ayr, and arrived at Troon this morning. The WILLIAM & JAMES, Gibbs, from Glasgow to Waterford, was driven on shore during the night at the entrance of this harbour, bilged and dismasted: crew saved. The BARBARA, from Troon to Dumfries, having lost her sails in the gale, was also driven on shore at the entrance of this harbour, but expected to be got off after discharging her cargo. The ROBERTS, McKellar, from Glasgow to Dublin, was run foul of during the gale, by a brig, which carried away her masts, but with assistance of a boat from the shore, she was towed to a safe beach south of Troon Point, from whence it is [Record received incomplete].

NMRS, MS/829/71 (no. 6313).

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. Ayr harbour (NS32SW 123.00) is centred at NS 32930 22754.

Ayr Bay is not noted as such on the 1998 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map. UKHO chart no. 2126 (1975, amended 1992) applies the name to the broad embayment between Irvine [name: NS 325 395] and Heads of Ayr [name: NS 284 188], and places the name around N55 29.4 W4 46.5 [NS 247 253].

The loss of this vessel is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998).
