ARCHITECT: Cornelius Armour, 1938.
Swedish Luma factory, later Caravanland, Shieldhall Industrial Estate, facing main road SW out of Glasgow. Art Deco building originally commissioned to coincide with Empire Exhibition as Glasgow HQ of the first international co-operatve factory for electric lamp manufacture. Erected by SCWS as three-storey flatted factory, with projecting staircase tower (25 metres) breaking through roofline, capped by bulbous glazed 'conning tower'. Originally brick-fronted, later rendered. Converted 1995-6 to 43, two- and three-apartment flats by Cornelius McClymont Architects. Twelve three apartment new built flats at rear in 1930s four-in-a-block style. Total cost: 4m. Winner of Saltire Award, 1997, Regeneration Design Award, 1998.
