OS 6" map (1958)

A grassy mound on the farm of Castleton is the remains of the castle of the Earl of Strathearn. Mallus, the first Earl lived here in the reign of Alexander I (1107-24).

OSA 1795

'Site of Castle. The site of a Castle once the seat of the Earls of Strathearn. There is nothing now visible but a large grassy mound which covers it is said [to be] the foundation.'

Name Book 1864

Apart from slight traces of what may be a short length of wall there is no evidence of this castle. The site lies on the flattish top and in the NW angle of a steep escarpment.

Visited by OS (EGC) 16 December 1966.

Nothing can be seen of this castle, which stood in what is now arable ground and improved pasture. Its location is indicated on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perthshire, sheet xcvi, 1867) to the N of the farmsteads of Castleton (NN92SW 58); these have also been removed.

Visited by RCAHMS (RJCM, JRS), 10 November 1995.
