Archaeology Notes

NJ90NE 8200 c. 961 057

N57 8.5 W2 4

NLO: Aberdeen [name: NJ 95 05].

Location formerly entered as NJ c. 96 05 [N57 8 W2 4].

Not to be confused with NJ90NE 8195.

Aberdeen, 21st Nov., the MAGNET (brig), Joss, from Shields, took the ground inside the North pier whilst entering the harbour, yesterday, but was towed off, and having lost her rudder became unmanageable, ran aground in the channel, and finally sunk in the lower basin.

Source: Shipping Intelligence, LL, No. 18,283, London, Saturday November 23 [1872].

NMRS, MS/829/69 (no. 3875).

The location assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary. Aberdeen Harbour (NJ90NE 7.00) is centred at NJ 95 05; the North Pier (NJ90NE 7.02) extends from NJ 9590 0570 to NJ 9639 0609. The present entrance may be considered to lie at NJ c. 963 060, but this location reflects development towards the East through the construction of successive piers and breakwaters.

The loss of this vessel is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998), possibly suggesting her successful recovery.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 9 August 2004.
