Dunvegan, Isle of Skye, 10th Oct., 7.30 p.m., the RACOON, of Aberdeen, Jones, has been wrecked off Loch Boisdale: crew landed here: condition of ship not yet ascertained.

Source: Shipping Intelligence, LL, No. 18,558, London, Monday October 13 1873.

Lochboisdale, 16th Oct., the RACOON, Jones, from Bangor to Aberdeen, with slates, which struck on a rock at Harstmul [Thairteamul] island, 9th Oct., will probably be a total wreck: her keel is broken, bottom much damaged and deck hogged: some of the materials and a greater part of the cargo has been landed. [Record received incomplete].

NMRS, MS/829/69 (no. 3993).

(Classified as wooden schooner, with cargo of slates: date of loss cited as 9 October 1873). Racoon: this vessel [was] wrecked on [a] rock off Harstmul [Thairteamul] Island, near Barra. Capt. Jones.

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. Harstmul Island cannot be located with certainty from the available map evidence, but may be equated with Thairteamul [name: NF 833 113], off the Eastern end of the Sound of Eriskay [Caolas Eirosgaigh].
