Gowan Cottage, Strawberry Bank, c.1835

Delightful stone cottage in beautiful ashlar, framed by impressive triple chimneystacks on the octagonal. Peer Gynt, 5a Strawberry Bank, c.1890, one of two semi-detached villas balanced around a central pend. Bay windows at each end enriched with startling in situ concrete crudely designed to look like timber boarding (perhaps the first deliberate board-marked concrete in the country - later fashionable in London's South Bank).

Taken from "West Lothian: An Illustrated Architectural Guide", by Stuart Eydmann, Richard Jaques and Charles McKean, 2008. Published by the Rutland Press http://www.rias.org.uk
