Archaeology Notes

NN95NW 27 9414 5822.

St Feargain's Well is in the eastern hamlet of old Pitlochry called Toberargan (an anglicised form of the same name).

J H Dixon 1925.

Fergna Britt, the fourth abbot of Iona, died in 623. It is probably his name that appears in the famous Tobar Fheargain, Fergan's Well, at Pitlochry.

W J Watson 1926.

(The hamlet of Toberargan is centred at NN 941 582 on OS 25" map, 1st ed.)

According to Mitchell, there were two wells, Tober Chalmaig or St Colm's Well, now covered over in Tigh-na-craig garden, and just above it Toberargan or Argan's Well.

H Mitchell 1923.

The name of this well, at NN 9414 5822, is not generally known, but several elderly residents know it as "Tober Argan". It has recently been renovated, and the water falls from a metal pipe into a small open concrete trough, before running off down a drain.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

There is no trace of the second well noted by Mitchell (1923), but the tradition is known and Mr Steel (A Steel, Tigh na Craig, Toberargan Road, Pitlochry) believes it was at the foot of his garden at approximately NN 9415 5813, where the ground is still inclined to be wet.

Visited by OS (A A) 11 April 1975.
