Archaeology Notes

NJ90NE 8233 c. 95 07

N57 9 W2 5

NLO: Aberdeen [name: NJ 95 05].

Not to be confused with NJ90NE 8096.

Aberdeen, 19th Feb. 'The MERCURY, Walker, of this place, went on shore at two o'clock yesterday morning, about a mile north of this, having mistaken a light on shore for the lights of the pier. If the weather moderates, it is expected the vessel may be got off'.

Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 5780, London, Tuesday February 25 1823.

NMRS, MS/829/71 (no. 6297).

A location at NJ c. 95 07 may be suggested for this stranding, which is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998). The vessel was presumably successfully recovered.

Aberdeen Bay is not noted as such on the 1999 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map. The name presumably applies to the ill-defined and sand-fringed indentation that forms a shallow arc extending North from the mouth of the River Dee (at NJ 96 05).

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 11 April 2005.
