NO05NE 46 0837 5660.

This fermtoun comprises twelve buildings and a kiln-and-chamber which lie in a fairly compact unit on either side of a small stream 110m NE of Pitcarmick steading. The buildings of the farmstead are described from N to S; a scatter of other buildings to the SW and NW are also described.

1. NO 0837 5665 This two-compartment building measures 16.6m E-W by 5.1m over rubble wall-footings 0.8m in thickness and 0.5m in height; several very large facing-stones are present. The entrances have probably been on the S side where there is an attached enclosure bisected from N to S by a low stony scarp.

2. NO 0838 5663 This three-compartment building measures 24.5m NNW-SSE by 5.6m over rubble wall-footings 1.1m in thickness and 0.5m in height; there are no visible entrances.

3. NO 0836 5664 This structure measures 11.3m N-S by 4m over rubble wall-footings (turf-covered) 1.5m in thickness and 0.2m in height. The building has two compartments with probable entrances on the E side.

4. NO 0836 5662 This single-compartment building measures 11m NW-SE by 4.3m over wall-footings 0.8m thick and 0.3m high; its SW side is poorly preserved and the entrance was probably on the NE side.

5. NO 0836 5661 This kiln-and-chamber measures 9.2m WNW-ESE by 5.4m over walls 1m thick and 0.3m high. The entrance to the chamber is on the NE side and the kiln bowl, which is at the ESE end, measures 2m in diameter and 1m in depth.

6. NO 0837 5662 The remains of this building measure 8m NW-SE by 4.5m over low footings 1m in thickness and 0.1m in height; there is an entrance on the NE side.

7. NO 0838 5661 The poorly-preserved remains of this building measure 11.7m NW-SE by 4.3m over walls about 1m in thickness and 0.2m in height; the building has two compartments but no entrances are visible.

8. NO 0838 5659 This two-compartment building measures 14.4m NW-SE by 4.6m over wall-footings 0.9m in thickness and 0.5m in height.

9. NO 0840 5659 This building measures 20m NW-SE by 4.8m over walls reduced to rubble banks 1.5m in thickness and 0.4m in height; no entrance is visible.

10. NO 0839 5657 The remains of this building measure 10.2m NE-SW by 4.5m over walls reduced to rubble banks 1.4m in thickness and 0.2m in height; the building has been slightly terraced into the SE-facing slope.

11. NO 0836 5656 This small structure measures 5.5m NE-SW by 4.4m over rubble wall-footings 0.8m in thickness and 0.5m in height and there is an entrance in the SE side.

12. NO 0835 5655 This building sits on a terraced platform and has three compartments (a large central one, with a small one at either end) and measures 20.7m WNW-ESE by 4.7m over low rubble walls reduced to banks 1.5m in thickness and 0.2m in height. No entrances are visible but these must have been in the NE side.

13. NO 0834 5654 This two-compartment building measures 10.5m ENE-WSW by 3.5m over rubble wall-footings 1.1m in thickness and 0.3m in height; no entrances are visible. A further five buildings are dispersed at various points to the SW of the main group of buildings.

14. NO 0830 5654 The first of these buildings is set at the W corner of the field containing the farmstead. It measures 5.8m WNW-ESE by 4m over wall-footings 0.8m in thickness and 0.3m in height; there is a probable entrance on the E end. Another building and a small structure lie to the NW of the main group of buildings.

15. NO 0825 5653 This building lies on the NW side of the fence to the W of (14). It has two compartments and measures 16.2m NE-SW by 3.6m over turf-covered wall-footings 0.8m thick and 0.3m high; the entrances are not visible.

16. NO 0823 5650 This building lies to the SW on the S side of the same fence and measures 9.8m E-W by 5m over turf-covered wall-footings 0.8m in thickness and 0.3m in height. An entrance is situated in the S wall and leads out on to a small attached enclosure. The building is marked as roofed on the OS 1st ed (1867), sheet 41.

17. NO 0821 5654 This building is overlain by the head-dyke to the NW of (16) and measures about 11m E-W by 4.7m over turf-covered wall-footings up to 1.2m in thickness and 0.2m in height. There is an entrance at the E end of the S side.

18. NO 0824 5646 This two-compartment building has been terraced into a S-facing slope at the edge of a modern arable field on the N side of the track leading up the Pitcarmick Burn. It measures 17.5m E-W by 4.7m over rubble walls up to 1m in thickness and 0.3m in height. Some 5m to the W there are the possible remains of a kiln or a small circular building and on the opposite side of the modern track, about 15m to the SW, there are the remains of a small enclosure.

19. NO 0830 5666 This roughly circular structure, which lies to the N of the sheepfold, measures 5m in diameter over a turf-covered bank 1.2m in thickness and 0.2m in height.
