Archaeology Notes

NT27NE 8070 c. 267 774

N55 59 W3 10.5

NLO: Port of Leith [name: NT 265 775].

Leith, 26th July. 'A vessel supposed to be the NORDSTJERN, Clearchusen, from hence to Fahrsund, was aground on the Weir end of the Pier this morning.'

Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 7916, London, Monday July 22 1839.

NMRS, MS/829/71 (no. 7477).

A location at NT c. 267 774 may be suggested for this loss. The present locked entrance and control tower (NT27NE 57.03, at NT 264 779) date from the rebuilding of the 1960's. The location of the 'weir' cannot be determined from the available map evidence.

The loss of this vessel is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998), presumably suggesting her successful recovery.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 19 July 2005.
