Philpstoun

Old Philpstoun retains much of its charm - a cluster of stone and pantiled dwellings at the very edge of a wood, and East Philpstoun Farm, a white-rendered, window-margined Improvement farmhouse. Only a gable remains of Philpstoun Mill, 1784. The village of Philpstoun grew with shale mines and oil works at White Quarries. Brick cottages of mine and railway workers spread out on either side of the wooded dip of the Pardovan Burn. Castlepark House, centrepiece to the village on its fine burnt-girt tump, is an opulent bay-windowed Victorian villa with baronial touches possibly incorporating an earlier house.
