South Bridge Street

The old turnpike road, and one reason why the old town moved south. The railway impinges at King Street, which used to be called Engine Knowe, where three rival hostelries - Bathgate Inn, Commercial Inn and Railway Tavern - fight it out for custom. Lothian & Borders Police Headquarters, 1958, by T B Gibson & Laing, with its George & Dragon motif by Norman Forrest now refaced by William Peden Architects, 2002. Confident red sandstone baroque on the gusset of North Bridge Street, 1912, by T R Irvine, with oriel, projecting bay window, ball finials and a pedimented entrance.

Taken from "West Lothian: An Illustrated Architectural Guide", by Stuart Eydmann, Richard Jaques and Charles McKean, 2008. Published by the Rutland Press http://www.rias.org.uk
