Archaeology Notes

NJ90NE 8261 c. 95 07

N57 9 W2 5

NLO: Aberdeen [name: NJ 95 05]

Aberdeen Bay [name centred NJ 956 075]

Girdle Ness [name: NJ 973 053].

Location formerly entered as NJ c. 95 06 [N57 9 W2 5].

Aberdeen, 10th Jan. The PAQUEBOT DU HAVRE, Coutet, of Bordeaux, from Newcastle, struck on Shields Bar 31st ult., and became leaky: she is now on the beach here, and it is feared will not be got off.

Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 10,553, London, Thursday January 13 1848.

Aberdeen, 14th Jan. The PAQUEBOT DU HAVRE ET BORDEAUX, reported in Lloyd's List of 13th inst., as the PAQUEBOT DU HAVRE, which went ashore on the beach here, after having struck on Shields Bar, is becoming a total wreck.

Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 10,556, London, Monday January 17 1848.

NMRS, MS/829/72 (no. 8296).

Leith, 11th Jan. A French brig, (laden with wheat), was stranded on the beach near Aberdeen 8th inst.: crew saved.

Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 10,553, London, Thursday January 13 1848.

NMRS, MS/829/72 (no. 8297).

(No classification specified: cargo cited as wheat, and date of loss as 8 January 1848). Paquebot du Havre et Bordeaux: this vessel stranded at Girdleness [Girdle Ness] or on the beach at Aberdeen.

Registration: French.

(Location of loss cited as N57 8.40 W2 2.50).

I G Whittaker 1998.

(Location entered as NJ c. 95 07 [N57 9 W2 5]). The location assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary. A location within the extensive area of Aberdeen Beach is preferred for the stranding of this vessel.

Aberdeen Beach is not noted as such on the 1999 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map, but the name evidently applies to the southern part of the lengthy and gently-curving sand-dune coast that stretches Northwards from Aberdeen, from NJ 95 06 to NK 02 26.

Aberdeen Bay is not noted as such on the 1999 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map. The name presumably applies to the ill-defined and sand-fringed indentation that forms a shallow arc extending North from the mouth of the River Dee (at NJ 96 05).

Aberdeen Harbour (NJ90NE 7.00) is centred at NJ 95 05. The present entrance may be considered to lie at NJ c. 963 060, but this location reflects development towards the East through the construction of successive piers and breakwaters.

The location of Shields Bar cannot be ascertained from the available map and chart evidence. Girdle Ness, the alternative location of loss, is the major promontory to the S of the harbour entrance.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 29 November 2005.
