Archaeological Notes

HY44NW 30 4367 4870 and 4353 4847.

At HY 4367 4870 a kitchen midden of shells, animal bones and occasional burnt stones, was found below 2 ft of sand in May 1970 by workmen digging foundations for new council houses. An oval beach stone with a sub-rectangular hollow 'about the size of a boot and 4 ins deep' was also found but taken away by a Mr Dunnet of MPBW, Kirkwall.
A similar midden was found in 1969 when digging the foundations of a new house at HY 4353 4847.
Surveyed at 1/2500.
